What Floorplan is Good For Our Lifestyle?

How to Choose a Layout That Actually Works for the Way You Live

You've decided it’s time for a new home, which is very exciting. But once you get past the Pinterest boards and paint swatches, one of the biggest choices you’ll make is picking the right floor plan. With so many options available, it can be tough to know what’s truly going to work for your day-to-day life.

Whether you’re planning to grow your family, downsize, entertain, or you are just craving better flow and function, your floor plan should feel like it fits you.

So, how do you choose one that checks all the boxes?

Start With Your Daily Routine

Before you fall in love with a layout, think about how you actually live in your home.

  1. Do you work from home and need a quiet, dedicated office?

  2. Are you constantly hosting game nights, dinner parties, or holidays?

  3. Do you need bedrooms close together for younger kids, or more separation for teens or guests?

  4. Is a first-floor primary suite a must-have for aging in place and avoiding stairs?

  5. Do you want open-concept living or do you prefer a little more separation between spaces?

Your answers will help narrow the field fast and keep you focused on what matters most to you.

Consider Your Stage of Life

The “perfect” floor plan looks different depending on where you are in life:

  • For Growing Families: Look for multi-bedroom layouts with flexible living spaces, a large kitchen island for gathering, and mudroom storage to handle the daily chaos.

  • For Busy Professionals: An open layout with a smart kitchen flow, home office space, and low-maintenance features might take priority

  • For Downsizers or Empty Nesters: You may want a single-story layout with minimal stairs, wider doorways, and a cozy but open entertaining space for visiting family and friends

  • For Entertainers: Think open-concept living, a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, a large island or bar, and a great room made for gathering

DON’T FORGET FUNCTION

Pretty renderings are fun to look at, but don’t lose sight of how the space functions. A great layout should make everyday life easier.

Pay attention to:

  • Flow - can you move comfortably between rooms?

  • Storage- are there enough closets, pantries, and built-ins?

  • Privacy- are bedrooms and bathrooms placed thoughtfully?

  • Flexibility- Can a space evolve with your needs over time?

The best floor plan isn’t just nice to look at. It is practical and livable.

WALK THROUGH IT (VIRTUALLY OR IN PERSON)

Once you have a few favorites, walk through them. Whether that’s an in-person tour or a virtual one. It’s one thing to see a layout on paper, and another to imagine yourself living in it.

Can you picture your morning routine? Hosting friends? Watching movies with your loved ones? If the layout supports your life in all those little ways, you’re on the right track!
